The Mandala Roseworks FireThorn combines premium spring steel with ThornGrip, Mandalas proprietary textured PEI blend, to deliver powerful first-layer adhesion across everything from everyday PLA to demanding engineering-grade filaments. Developed over nearly three years of research, experimentation, and in-house manufacturing work, FireThorn was built for printersand buildersthat expect more from their build surface.
ThornGrip features a distinctive satin texture comparable to approximately 220-grit sandpaper. It produces a clean, finely textured finish on the bottom of your prints while delivering the kind of mechanical grip that helps keep corners down and large parts planted.

During Mandalas testing, many of these materials printed without bed adhesive. For especially aggressive engineering filaments, a thin layer of glue may still be recommendednot necessarily to increase adhesion, but as a release layer to help protect the surface.
FireThorn is designed to achieve strong adhesion at lower bed temperatures than many conventional build surfaces. That can mean shorter warm-up times, less energy consumption, and less heat being pumped into your printer or workspace.

These are starting points rather than universal slicer settings. Filament formulation, first-layer height, enclosure temperature, print geometry, and printer calibration can all affect the ideal temperature. Mandala has successfully printed PLA as low as 25C during its RMRRF testing.
FireThorn plates are manufactured from 0.65mm-thick 1075 spring steel, providing an excellent balance of flexibility, durability, and resistance to permanent deformation. With the ThornGrip coating applied, the completed plate measures approximately 0.85mm thick.
Once your print has cooled, remove the plate and flex it to release the part. No chisels, no wrestling match, and hopefully no launching freshly printed parts across the roomalthough we know some of you will find a way.
FireThorns spring-steel construction was specifically tested on Mandala Roseworks MagBeds with Beacon and Cartographer eddy-current probes. During Mandalas testing, the plate material did not produce the magnet-related probing spikes that can occur with some flex-plate materials over embedded magnetic beds.
As always, rerun your Z offset and bed mesh after changing build plates. FireThorns coating thickness and aggressive texture may require a slightly different first-layer setup than your current PEI plate. Early users have reported excellent holding power once the first-layer squish was properly dialed in.
FireThorn is not another generic textured PEI sheet with a different logo printed on it. It is an independently developed build system from a company known for precision-machined beds, kinematic mounting hardware, and components made for builders who refuse to settle for close enough.
Give your first layer something worth holding onto.
Allow the plate and print to cool before flexing whenever possible. Because ThornGrip has a deliberately aggressive texture, ordinary paper towels and microfiber cloths may snag or leave fibers behind. Wash the surface carefully with warm water and dish soap when cleaning is needed, and avoid scraping it with sharp tools.
Always verify your Z offset after installation. Start with Mandala Roseworks recommended bed temperatures, then adjust based on your filament, printer, enclosure, and first-layer results.
